Why I Skip Secret Santa: 10 Tips for Holidays at School

Early in my teaching career, I tried to join the cheer at the holidays. Dutifully, I signed up for Secret Santa, filled out my questionnaire about likes and loves, and drew a name from a hat.

As much as I appreciated a little treat every day for a week, I actually found the entire process overwhelming. It was too much to sneak a gift into someone’s mailbox or onto their desk. Very quickly, I learned that participating in Secret Santa is not sustainable for me, so I haven’t participated the last few years.

Does that make me a Grinch?

No, it makes me practical. Rather than reject the holidays wholeheartedly, I have leaned into practices that make the holidays an enjoyable and sustainable part of the classroom.

3 Ways to Grade Virtually: Easy, Effortless, and Free

In the classroom, I use a lot of paper. Since my juniors will take paper ACT tests, we practice on paper. For my sophomores, paper annotation is often more accessible. And for long-term projects and presentations, a paper rubric is often handy: students and I can look at a screen and a rubric at the

How to Manage and Survive Classroom Crunch Time

We’re getting to the time of the year when the calendar starts to condense and compress. It’s the classroom crunch! Suddenly, it’s a week until Thanksgiving break, tomorrow is probably a snow day, and you’re wondering where the time has gone. Things are starting to look grim. You have too much curriculum and not enough

4 Ways to Easily Lower Decision Fatigue in the Classroom

Teachers make more than 1500 decisions a day! That’s at least 3 decisions per minute! As a result, teachers often suffer from decision fatigue, which can lead to procrastination, tension, and frustration. Since teachers make so many decisions, it can be difficult to identify decision fatigue as a trigger. However, when you begin to consciously

Give Up these 10 Classroom Habits to be a Happier Teacher

Education is full of trends! Some trends really take off, especially in the digital age. However, not every trend is worthy of becoming one of your go-to, tried-and-true classroom habits. In fact, my #1 suggestion for a happier, healthier classroom is to stop trying to do it all. Accept and welcome limitations. Nurture classroom habits

4 Ways To Manage The High School ELA Grading Load

There is no grading load quite like the grading load of a high school English teacher. My sophomores just turned in persuasive papers. By the time I’ve turned their papers around, it will be time for my juniors to submit literary criticism essays. While grading papers is not my favorite chore, it’s no longer an

5 Free Must-Have Digital Accounts for Teachers

I just changed school districts. There’s a lot involved in getting onboard with a new district: filling out all the paperwork, signing contracts and agreements, and migrating digital files. That’s all in addition to physically moving your classroom space and getting settled in a new building, room, and town. Recently, I received my new login

What I Learned In a Year of Sustainable Teaching

“Sustainable” was my word of the year. When I chose this word in January, I never imagined how important sustainable teaching practices would be in 2020. Never did I expect that a focus on sustainable teaching would help me find balance in other parts of my life! Here’s what I learned this year, and I’ll

10 Harsh Decluttering Truths Your Classroom Needs

At the end of last school year, I left a district I had been in for eleven years! Moving allowed me to live much closer to my family (now it’s 10 minutes to see my parents, not two hours), so it was definitely the right choice. While I’m excited to start this new adventure, leaving

Everything I Wish I’d Learned as a Young Teacher

As a young teacher, I believed I knew everything. I complained loudly about being required to teach Beowulf, and I spoke passionately about social justice. My classes were also messy. One group created a comic book hero named after their favorite chewing tobacco, and I didn’t notice until it was too late. Another group threw
